What a real "Roach Guy" actually does
Roach control has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. The pros in our network use modern integrated pest management approaches that are more effective and safer than the broadcast-spray methods most people imagine when they think of roach extermination:
- Species identification. German cockroaches (the small ones that infest kitchens), American cockroaches (the large "water bugs" in basements), and Oriental cockroaches all need different treatment approaches.
- Gel bait application. Targeted gel baits placed in cracks, crevices, and harborage zones where roaches actually live — far more effective than sprays because roaches carry the bait back to nesting areas.
- Insect growth regulators (IGRs). Compounds that prevent roach reproduction, breaking the breeding cycle within weeks. Critical for German cockroaches, which can re-infest from a single fertilized female if reproduction isn't shut down.
- Sanitation and harborage assessment. Identifying the conditions that brought roaches in — leaks, food access, clutter — and addressing them so reinfestation doesn't happen.
- Multi-visit treatment plan. German cockroach infestations typically require 2-4 visits over 6-8 weeks for complete elimination.
Notably absent: broadcast spraying. Modern roach control rarely involves spraying baseboards or fogging rooms — both approaches are less effective and create unnecessary exposure for residents and pets.
German cockroaches vs. American cockroaches: very different problems
German cockroach (Blattella germanica)
The small, tan, indoor-breeding species responsible for most NJ apartment and kitchen roach problems. About ½ inch long with two dark stripes behind the head. German cockroaches breed indoors year-round, never voluntarily go outside, and can establish massive populations within months. They're the species behind serious infestations in multi-family housing — once established, they spread between connected units through walls, plumbing chases, and shared HVAC. Treatment requires multi-visit gel bait and IGR programs.
American cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
The large (1.5+ inch) reddish-brown roaches sometimes called "palmetto bugs" or "water bugs." American cockroaches typically live outdoors or in sewer systems and enter homes through drains, basements, and ground-level entry points — especially during summer rain or building maintenance work. They don't usually establish large indoor breeding populations. Treatment focuses on entry-point sealing, basement/crawlspace inspection, and exterior perimeter treatment. Very different job from German roach control.
Signs of a cockroach infestation
Roaches are mostly nocturnal, so daytime sightings usually mean a serious population:
Why hardware-store roach products fail
Walk into any NJ Home Depot and you'll see roach sprays, foggers, and "roach motel" traps. They're designed for casual encounters with one or two roaches — they don't address actual infestations. Foggers in particular often make things worse by scattering populations into wall voids and adjacent units, complicating professional treatment that comes later. German cockroaches develop pesticide resistance fast, and single-product treatment without rotation almost guarantees a population rebound.
If you're in a NJ apartment building or multi-family home, DIY treatment also doesn't address adjacent units. Roaches travel through walls, plumbing, and shared infrastructure — meaning your downstairs neighbor's roaches become your roaches the moment you spray. Real elimination usually requires coordinated treatment across affected units, which only a licensed exterminator can organize with the landlord or property manager.

Roaches aren't just disgusting — they're a documented health issue:
- Asthma trigger: CDC data identifies cockroach allergens as a major trigger for childhood asthma, especially in urban housing
- Food contamination: Roaches walk through sewage and garbage, then across food prep surfaces — spreading Salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens
- Allergic reactions: Roach feces, saliva, and shed skins are common indoor allergens
- Mental health impact: Persistent roach infestations are associated with significant tenant and homeowner distress and quality-of-life impact
What to expect when a Roach Guy shows up
- Free initial inspection scheduled within 1-2 business days of being matched
- Detailed inspection of kitchen, bathrooms, and any affected areas (typically 30-45 minutes)
- Written quote with multi-visit treatment plan — German roach jobs typically run 2-4 visits over 6-8 weeks
- First treatment visit applies gel baits and IGRs in targeted zones
- Follow-up visits monitor progress, replenish bait, and confirm elimination
